From George Washington to Brigadier General Anthony Wayne, 14 November 1779
To Brigadier General Anthony Wayne
Head Quarters West point 14th Novemr 1779.
Dear Sir
I have recd your favr of the 10th Inst. by Major Moore. I should have no objection to his joining your family during Captain Archers indisposition, was it not inconsistent with his Rank according to the Regulations of the Army1 and interfering with his present duty of Brigade Major and Inspector.2
I have directed two Lieutenant Colonels to be nominated to me to fill the vacancies in Colonel Febiger’s and Meiggs’s Regiments.3 Major Hulls absence will be but of short duration, and I would not for that reason wish to fill that Vacancy.
If you will send up the Quarter Master of the Corps or the person who has usually drawn supplies for them, he can have the shoes wanting.4 A general distribution of the other species of Cloathing will be shortly made.5 I am Dear Sir Your most obt Servt

LS, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, PHi: Wayne Papers; Df, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. GW signed the cover of the LS.
1. GW is referring to “Instructions for the Major” of a regiment, found in 132–34.
2. For Maj. Thomas Lloyd Moore’s appointment as brigade major, see the general orders for 12 June. Despite GW’s reservations, Wayne apparently employed Moore (see Wayne to GW, 18 Dec., and GW to Wayne, 20 Dec.).
3. These directions and any nominations for lieutenant colonels in these light infantry regiments have not been identified. The need for these officers ended when GW ordered the dissolution of the Light Infantry corps in his letter to Wayne of 28 December.
4. For the sending of Lt. Theophilus Woodbridge, see Wayne to GW, 15 November.
5. GW explicitly included the Light Infantry in the distribution of clothing outlined in the general orders for 20 Nov.; see also GW to Wayne, 27 Nov., and to Rufus Putnam, 20 December.
