i Receive just now your excellency’s letter1 and Conformably to your orders i have the honour to propose major mernan for the expedition on susquehanna. i write to him to take your further orders for that Country.2 i have the honour to be with great Respect your excellency’s the most obedient and very humble servant

2GW wrote to Major Murnan on 4 May from Middlebrook: “As you have been appointed by Brigadier General Du Portail for the frontier service during the ensuing campaign—You will forthwith repair to Wyoming on the Susquehannah and take the orders of the commanding officer, who at present is Brigadier General Hand” (DLC:GW).
