Fish Kill [N.Y.] February. 17th 1780

Dr Sir,

I left Morris Town on Friday, and arrived at this place on Sunday.1 A Detail of Military Matters, I perswade myself Your Excellency duly receive’s from Genl Heath, who is still here, which renders a descant on that Subject from me, at present unnecessary.2 I have the Honour to be, with the greatest respect Sir Yr Excellency’s Most Obt Hume Sert

2GW had ordered Howe to take command of the Highlands department at West Point (see GW to Howe, 5 Feb.). On 20 Feb., Howe left Fishkill to confer with Maj. Gen. William Heath at West Point prior to taking the command (see Udny Hay to Nathanael Greene, that date, in Greene Papers, description begins Richard K. Showman et al., eds. The Papers of General Nathanael Greene. 13 vols. Chapel Hill, N.C., 1976–2005. description ends 5:403–4). Heath left West Point on 22 Feb. (see Howe to GW, 28 Feb. [first letter]).
