1. Heath most likely enclosed Maj. Gen. Robert Howe’s letter to him dated 6 Aug. from the “Camp on Keelers Hill,” the first part of which reported on the engagement near New Rochelle, New York. It contained a similarly worded account of the skirmish that Howe conveyed to GW (see Howe to GW, 6 Aug.). After noting that he had missed Heath’s express because he had been at Horseneck (Greenwich, Conn.) before and after the engagement, Howe wrote: “I enclose you a return of Glover’s Brigade. the Horse are so detached that it is not possible to send you a return at present; indeed in the service we are upon it will be dificult to make returns at such short periods but you may be assured I shall endeavour it.” In a short postscript, Howe informed Heath that he was sending a return he had just received for Col. Elisha Sheldon’s cavalry regiment (MHi: Heath Papers).
