May it Please your Excelency

We are Just Lit at English town—& have the Pleasure to Inform your Excelency that the advance Guard of the Enemy have Encamped at the Brick house about three Miles from Munmouth Court house on the Direct Course to sandy hook.

We shall Remain Near them to Night & hopes to Give you the Earliest Inteligence of their March. We have the Honour to be Your Excelencys Most Obdt Hbl. Sert

James Moore, Jr. (1756–1813), of Philadelphia served as a captain in the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment from January 1776 until September 1777, when he was appointed a major in the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment. He transferred to the 2d Pennsylvania Regiment in January 1783 and served until the end of the war.

1. Englishtown was located about four miles northwest of Monmouth Court House on the road to Cranbury, in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
