My Lord

An Officer of the Marichause Dragoons has charge of a large sum of the Money called out of circulation, which is to be sent forward to Philada. Be pleased therefore to direct a careful Officer of the Virginia line to proceed with it with an Escorte of six Men from Capt. Belkins troop.1 Your Lordship will be pleased to give this Officer the same instructions as you gave to Capt. Stith who took charge of the former parcel of Money. He is to keep an Account of his expenditures. I am Yr Lordships Most obt Servt.

Df, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. GW probably enclosed this letter with his letter to Capt. Bartholomew von Heer of this date.

1For GW’s orders to have an officer carry this money from Hartford, Conn., to Fishkill, N.Y., and to have another officer deliver it to Stirling at Ramapo, N.J., see GW to Thomas Nixon, 7 Aug. and to Heer, this date.

Capt. Henry Bedkin commanded an independent troop of light cavalry assigned to the main army, and GW had assigned the troop to operate with Stirling’s division (see GW to Stirling, 24 July).
