To Major General Robert Howe

[Morristown] Thursday 30th Decr 1779

Genn,

I have the honor to transmit You all the Letters which have been sent or received by me, on the subject of Colo. Mitchells attending the Trial of Major General Arnold. They are all numbered in regular order from No. 1 to 9 Inclusive. When the Court have read them, they will be pleased to return them.1 I have the honor to be with great respect & esteem gentn Your Most Obt st

1Five of the nine letters have been identified in DLC:GW: “No. 2” (GW to John Mitchell, 14 Dec., found at Mitchell to GW, 17 Dec., n.1); “No. 4” (second letter from GW to Nathanael Greene, 23 Dec., found at first letter from GW to Greene, same date, n.2); “No. 6” (first letter from GW to Greene, 23 Dec.); “No. 8” (GW to the Board of War, 24 Dec.); and “No. 9” (Board of War to GW, 26 Dec., found at GW to the Board of War, 24 Dec., n.5). The numbers are found on the dockets.

Mitchell eventually testified at Arnold’s court-martial (see Mitchell to GW, 17 Dec., n.4).
