From John Jay to George Clinton, 23 February 1782

To George Clinton

Madrid 23 Feby 1782

Dr Sir—

My last to you was written on the 16 Novr.1 since which I have not ^had^ the pleasure of hearing from you—

Three Days ago Mrs. Jay was delivered of a Daughter & I take the Liberty of enclosing a Letter ^on that Subject^ for my Father, which you be so kind as to send him—2

I congratulate you on the sucessful Issue of the last Campaign, to the Brillancy of which the ^late^ Surrender of Fort St. Philip at Mahon has much contributed—

Your Hemisphere brightens fast and I ^there is Reason to^ hope another vigorous Campaign will dispose Great Britain to leave ^our country^ you with a quick prospect of liberty & independence ^be followed by Halcyon Days^

Be pleased to present our best Compliments to Mrs. Clinton—^my old friend^ Cornelia I suppose is so grown that I should not readily know her again, tell her however that we remember both her & her Sister—3 When you see Mr Benson & Capt Platt4 assure them of my Regards

Mr Benson writes me that your Judges are Industriously serving their Country, but that their Country had not as yet made an adequate Provision for them—5 This is bad Policy, and Poverty cannot excuse it— The Bench is at present well filled, cou but it should be remembered that altho ^we are told that^ Justice is represented as ^should be^ blind, ^yet^ there are no Proverbs which tell us ^declare^ that she ought also to be hungry— Assure these Gentlemen of my Esteem and believe me to be dear Sir with sincere Attachmt. your Friend & Servt.
