To George Washington from Major General Artemas Ward, 6 October 1776

From Major General Artemas Ward

Boston 6 October 1776.

Sir

Yesterday I received from Mr Glover, Agent at Marblehead, a Box of broad Swords, which he lately found in the Scotch Ship Ann, that was taken some time since.1 Also received from Mr Bradford, Agent for Continental prizes, the inclosed Invoice, of articles which he has in his hands. The reason he gave for delaying it so long, was, the plaids were infected with the small pox, and he thought it necessary to cleanse and air them considerable time before they were used.2 I am Your Excellency’s Obedient Humble Servant

Artemas Ward

LS, DLC:GW; LB, MHi: Ward Papers.

1For the capture of the British transport Anne, see Ward to GW, 9 June, and note 2. Continental Prize Agent Jonathan Glover previously had given most of the arms from the Anne to his brother, Col. John Glover, for the use of his regiment (see Ward to GW, 29 July).

2John Bradford’s invoice of this date lists not only plaid cloth but also camp kettles, canteens, candlesticks, tablespoons, rugs, and blankets (DLC:GW).
