To George Washington from Lord Stirling, 26 July 1776

From Lord Stirling

New York, 26 July 1776. Asks GW to decide on Capt. Joseph Butler’s request to resign his commission and Lt. Col. John Parke’s request for a “leave of Absence for About a fortnight.”1 Stirling adds: “I have been obliged to take a little Medicine which obliges me to stay at Home or I should have been at Head Quarters this Morning.”

ALS, DLC:GW.

1Parke wrote Stirling earlier on this date requesting “Leave of absence for eight or ten Days . . . to settle some affairs” at home that required his presence. “Major [William] Bacon,” Parke said, “is an able Officer & is capable of the Management of the Regt [of artificers] in Case they should be call’d to Action before I return which I imagine will not be the Case” (DLC:GW).
