New York, 26 July 1776. Asks GW to decide on Capt. Joseph Butler’s request to resign his commission and Lt. Col. John Parke’s request for a “leave of Absence for About a fortnight.”1 Stirling adds: “I have been obliged to take a little Medicine which obliges me to stay at Home or I should have been at Head Quarters this Morning.”

1. Parke wrote Stirling earlier on this date requesting “Leave of absence for eight or ten Days . . . to settle some affairs” at home that required his presence. “Major [William] Bacon,” Parke said, “is an able Officer & is capable of the Management of the Regt [of artificers] in Case they should be call’d to Action before I return which I imagine will not be the Case” (DLC:GW).
