Philadelphia February 25. 1781

Sir,

Your Excellency’s Letter of the 17th Instant with its Enclosures were received last Evening;1 and I have now the Honor of forwarding the enclosed Despatches from Genl Greene & Copy of a Letter from Governor Jefferson, which contain the latest Intelligence from the Southward.2

The Intelligence is interesting & Situation of Affairs critical. It is however to be hoped that the Spirit of the Inhabitants may afford such Aid to General Greene as shall enable him to give More agreeable Information in a short Time.3 I have the Honor to be with very great respect your Excellency’s most obedient & most humble Servant

2. The dispatches from Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene were likely his letter to GW of 9 Feb. and its enclosures, which Greene had sent to Huntington on 10 Feb. asking that he forward them to GW (see Greene Papers description begins Richard K. Showman et al., eds. The Papers of General Nathanael Greene. 13 vols. Chapel Hill, N.C., 1976–2005. description ends , 7:271). GW acknowledged receipt of the letter when he wrote Greene on 21 March, but his response had been delayed by his conference with Lieutenant General Rochambeau at Newport (DLC:GW; see also GW to Greene, 27 Feb.). The letter from Virginia governor Thomas Jefferson was a copy of his to Huntington of 17 February. On its docket, GW’s aide-de-camp Tench Tilghman wrote: “In letter of 25th Feby” (DLC:GW). The content is essentially the same as Jefferson’s letter to GW of 17 Feb. (see also Jefferson Papers description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date.
