1Count Casimir Pulaski, a Polish officer who on September 15, 1777, had been appointed by Congress to the newly-created post of “Commander of Horse.”

To this letter H appended the following translation: “Sir, His Excellency desires you immediately to collect all the horse, except those on necessary duty and repair to some place as near his quarters as you possibly can, consistent with the accommodation of the horses. Inform him when you have done this and lose no time in doing it. Yrs. A Hamilton”

The following notes, in Pulaski’s hand, also appear on the letter: “I Receive now contrarys orders of his excellency as you will see, and I pray you to joigne me in the army as quick as you can.

“p.S. As soon as you meet the encampement, you will send me a orderly Light horse to warn me of your poste.

“You will order, to the men of my guard that I have send before you to the same place where you are; to follow you and joigne me in the army.”

2This town in Pennsylvania was the site of Washington’s Headquarters during part of October. While there, he apparently established his Headquarters at the house of Peter Wentz.
