Thomas Jefferson to Robert Patterson, 1 October 1809
To Robert Patterson
Monticello Octob. 1. 09.
Dear Sir
Mr Lambert does not, in the inclosed letter, say precisely that he meant it as a communication to the Philosophical society, yet from a particular expression in it, I think it was his idea. I send it to you therefore to be made such use of as you think proper, and of which you are the best judge. I salute you with constant esteem & respect.
Th: Jefferson
RC (PPAmP: APS Archives, Manuscript Communications); addressed (torn): “Mr Robert P[atterson]”; franked. PoC (MHi); endorsed by TJ. Enclosures: William Lambert to TJ, 19 Sept. 1809, and enclosure.
On 6 Oct. 1809 the American Philosophical Society considered this letter and referred Lambert’s table on lunar movements to a committee consisting of John Garnett, Patterson, and John Rhea Smith (APS, Minutes [MS in PPAmP]).
