RC (ViU: TJP-CC); dateline beneath signature; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Eqr Monticello”; endorsed by TJ as received 29 Aug. 1814 and so recorded in SJL; with TJ’s incorrectly dated notation at foot of text: “Dec. [Aug.] 29. 14. gave ord. on Gibson & Jeff. for 50.D. on acct.”
Daniel Ferrell Carr (1786–1847), the son of Garland Carr and brother of Frank Carr, succeeded his father at Bentivar, the family estate in Albemarle County. Carr later owned a house in Charlottesville designed and constructed about 1830 by one of TJ’s master builders. Carr was an early member of the Agricultural Society of Albemarle, served as a director, secretary, and treasurer of the Rivanna Company, and was a subscriber for Central College ( 3 [1895]: 208–10; 26; , 515; , 161, 403; , 105, 106; ViU: Rivanna Navigation Company, Directors’ Minutes, 1828–51; , 404; Albemarle Co. Will Book, 18:123–4).
TJ noted in his financial records under 1 and 7 Aug. 1814 that after a $50 payment on the earlier date, he owed Carr money totaling $192, plus interest, for sixty-four barrels of corn. TJ satisfied this obligation with the $50 payment noted above and a further payment of $109.56 on 8 Jan. 1815. Later, on 15 Jan. 1817 TJ indicated that he had “Delivered 555.D. to E. Bacon to pay D. F. Carr for 111. barrels of corn” ( , 2:1301, 1302, 1306, 1330; TJ to Carr, 29 Aug. 1814).
