Joseph Scott (ca. 1743–1810) rose from second lieutenant to major in the Continental army during the Revolutionary War. He was appointed United States marshal of the Eastern District of Virginia by TJ in 1802. Scott became marshal of the District of Virginia when the eastern and western districts were merged later that year and held the post until his death (Heitman, Continental Army description begins Francis B. Jeremiah yancey, the son of Charles Yancey, served as an ensign in the 5th Infantry Regiment, United States army, from 12 Dec. 1808 until 20 Oct. 1809. He returned to the army as a third lieutenant in the artillery in 1817 and was an infantry captain at the time of his death in 1829 (Heitman, U.S. Army description begins Francis B.
