§ From James H. Audrain and Others. December 1813. “We take the liberty of recommending to your consideration Solomon Sibbley, long a resident of this Territory as a Gentleman well qualified to discharge the duties of a Judge of the General Court of the Territory; his integrity, intelligence & ability induce us to believe that in the event of his appointment he would discharge the duties of the Office with honour to himself & advantage to his Country.”1

RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1809–17, filed under “Sibley”). 1 p. Signed by Audrain and thirty-one others. Undated; docketed “1813” in an unidentified hand; conjectural date assigned here based on the docket and the assumption that the recommendation, which was certainly not made before the recapture of Detroit on 27 Sept. 1813, was likely submitted after Congress convened on 6 Dec. 1813.

1. The three Michigan Territory judges—John Griffin, James Witherell, and Augustus B. Woodward—continued in office after the British left the Territory in the fall of 1813. JM nominated Sibley as district attorney for Michigan Territory on 8 Jan. 1816, and the Senate confirmed the appointment the following day (Carter, Territorial Papers description begins Clarence Carter et al., eds., The Territorial Papers of the United States (28 vols.; Washington, 1934–75). description ends , Michigan, 10:21, 46–47, 215–16, 605, 754).
