From John Jay to Maria Jay Banyer, 30 March 1813

To Maria Jay Banyer

Bedford—30 March 1813.

My dear Maria

I have recd. your Letter of the 22d. Inst:—1 we are happy to learn that the Fever spread no further in your Family, and that you and Sally continue as well as usual. I hope a Trip to this place will conduce to the Health of you both— the most pleasant Season for it would you know be between the Middle of May and the middle of June. I wish you may have some person with you, to whom the Charge of the Family could be safely confided during your absence from it.

Mrs. Sedgwick’s Recovery gives us all pleasure— I wish we had as agreable Information respecting her Mother’s Health. This is an unfavorable Month to Invalids, and it is to be hoped that she will derive Benefit from the fine Season which is approaching.

The matters to which you allude are always to be treated with Delicacy, and your Sentiments on that Head are proper—

Augusta was doubtless disappointed at missing her Sister; but it has had no Influence on her Behaviour, which constantly evinces Equanimity, and Respect to Propriety— The Report of the match which you mention as not improbable, had not reached us. If it should take place I wish it may turn out well— I have heard much, but know very little of the Gentleman— as to the Lady she has my best wishes.

On the first of next month our minister is to leave us— none of the Congregation, that I have heard of, oppose his going— He does not find himself at his Ease— and they are not pleased. Who will succeed him, cannot as yet be even conjectured; and I fear we shall be a good while like Sheep without a Shepherd—2

We are all as well as we were last week, when Augusta wrote. Peter writes me that he had lately been to Rye and found our Friends there as well as usual.3 Our Love to Sally I am my Dear Daughter your very affte. Father
