To John Jay from William Jay, 7 September 1812

From William Jay

Mr: John Mc:Vickar’s. Hyde Park. 7 Septr: 1812.

My dear Father

I left New York on Friday morning with Augusta, and proceeded in Mrs: Mc:Vickar’s Carriage to this place which, we reached early yesterday morning. Mrs: Mc:V. not finding it convenient to leave Town as soon as we did, waited till Saturday when she embarked on board the Steam Boat with Maria & with Mr: & Mrs: John Mc:Vickar. Maria had intended to land here, & remain with us till Wednesday, but having unfortunately caught cold in her face which swelled & caused her some pain, she thought it best to proceed directly to Albany. We hope to see her on Wednesday.

I long my dear Father, to introduce Augusta to you; & most fervently do I hope & believe, that she will administer to your happiness, as well, as to that of your Son. In her I trust, you will find an affectionate Daughter; and I am confident that she will very soon discover with a grateful heart, that I have given her a Father, who will by his tenderness and love, supply the place of the one she has lately lost.1

Augusta joins me in begging to be affectionately remembered to Nancy Sally & Mary. I remain my Dear Father Your very affecte Son

William Jay

John Jay Esqr:

ALS, NNC (EJ: 09661).

1Augusta’s father John McVickar died on 15 May 1812.
