From James Madison to Richard Rush, 27 November 1816

To Richard Rush

Wednesday Novr. 27. [1816]

J. Madison requests a consultation with the Heads of Departments today at 12 OC and that they remain to dinner with him.

RC (PHi: Richard Rush Papers). Addressed by JM on verso “The Attorney General” and docketed there by Rush, possibly at a later date: “(And remain to dinner). Mr. Madison Nov: 1816— Cabinet meeting in which the annual message to congress (being his last) was read and considered. R.R. We remained to dine.” Filed with the RC is a memorandum from Rush, dated May 1855: “Original notices of Cabinet meetings in the days of President Madison, in his own hand-writing, the public objects being stated, though not always. I observe that he never uses the term ‘Cabinet,’ but heads of department. They make up, of course, but a small portion of the meetings held, most of the notices being given through the department of State, or by Mr Coles his private Secretary. We often remained to dine, or some of us, when not specially asked beforehand as seen herein; his habits being cordially and delightfully hospitable.”
