To John T. Barraud

Monticello Dec. 25.

Th: Jefferson presents mr Barraud his respectful salutations, and his thanks for the pamphlets from mr Warden which have come safely to hand. he has no reason to believe any letter accompanied them, as he had before recieved a letter on their subject from the Abbé Rochon author of them. with his acknolegements for mr Barraud’s kind care of them he prays him to recieve the assurance of his great respect.

PoC (DLC: TJ Papers, 197:35025); partially dated; dateline at foot of text; endorsed by TJ as a letter of 25 Dec. 1812 and so recorded in SJL.

John Taylor Barraud (1788–1821), physician, attended the College of William and Mary in about 1806. His father, Dr. Philip Barraud, corresponded at least once with TJ, and his sister Anne Blaus Barraud married TJ’s friend John H. Cocke. Barraud studied medicine at Saint Thomas’s Hospital in London under the renowned surgeon Astley Cooper, 1810–12. He served as a military surgeon during the War of 1812 and later became prominent as a physician in Norfolk, where he died after a lingering illness (WMQ description begins William and Mary Quarterly, 1892–  description ends , 1st ser., 16 [1908]: 234; 22 [1914]: 219; Wyndham B. Blanton, Medicine in Virginia in the Eighteenth Century [1931], 343–4; several letters by Barraud in ViW: Barraud Family Papers; TJ to Philip Barraud, 15 Jan. 1802 [DLC]; William and Mary Provisional List description begins A Provisional List of Alumni, Grammar School Students, Members of the Faculty, and Members of the Board of Visitors of the College of William and Mary in Virginia. From 1693 to 1888 [1941] description ends , 7; American Beacon and Norfolk & Portsmouth Daily Advertiser, 5 June 1821).

See TJ to William Short, 26 Apr. 1812, for a discussion of the pamphlets probably forwarded in Barraud’s missing letter to TJ of 3 Dec. 1812, which was recorded in SJL as received from Norfolk on 17 Dec. 1812.
