Thomas Pinckney to John Armstrong, 18 November 1813 (Abstract)

Thomas Pinckney to John Armstrong, 18 November 1813 (Abstract)

§ Thomas Pinckney to John Armstrong. 18 November 1813, Charleston, “Head Quarters Sixth District.” “I have the honor of transmitting Copies of the Letters mentioned in mine of 16th inst.

“I purpose leaving Charleston tomorrow on my route to Milledgeville.”

RC and enclosures (DNA: RG 107, LRRS, P-299:7). 1 p. Marked in an unidentified hand: “Shown to the President.” Pinckney enclosed a copy of his 15 Nov. 1813 letter to Brig. Gen. David R. Williams (4 pp.), informing him that Pinckney had been placed in command of the campaign against the hostile Creek Indians, giving Williams the option of either waiting for Pinckney at Milledgeville, Georgia or taking the U.S. regulars from Fort Stoddert to join Brig. Gen. John Floyd’s detachment of Georgia militia, provisionally recommending that the Georgia, Tennessee, and U.S. forces meet near the confluence of the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers, asking that Williams give special attention to the prevention of supply shortages, and cautioning him against surprise attacks. Also enclosed was a copy of Pinckney’s 16 Nov. 1813 instructions to Floyd and Tennessee militia Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson (8 pp.; with one or more pages missing at the end), giving detailed suggestions as to the best routes and means for transporting supplies, and urging that ample security precautions be taken despite the temptation to underestimate the hostile Creek force.
