To John Jay from Peter Augustus Jay, 12 March 1813

From Peter Augustus Jay

New York 12 March 1813

Dear Papa

I have recd. your letter of the 9th.1 & one from Nancy of the same Date2 & am very happy to learn from the latter, that your Health is rather better than usual for the Season. William & Augusta have I am afraid had an unpleasant Journey.

Aunt Livingston is ill & Matilda & Aunt Watkins have both gone to Oak hill. I do not know what is her Disorder, she had been sick at Albany & when a little better had returned to Oak hill on a bed in a Sleigh. Lady Mary tells me, that on her way home she had a stroke of the Palsy, but Mr Sedgwick writes to Genl Clarkson, that he had recd a letter from Mr Livingston mentioning that she was better on her Arrival.

I have paid Aunt Watkins the $26 25/100 & sent the Receipt by William— but I had forgotten Zilpahs wages, which she shall have as soon as she returns.

I have some Doubts whether John Holmes to whom I have put out Money is the Son of Abijah. He was General V. Cortlandts agent in Poundridge & has a Son also named John, who is a Miller & said to have some Property, & who has joined in the Bond— The boundaries of the Land Mortgaged are copied from the original Deed from General V Cortlandt to John Holmes the Mortgager. He had given a Mortgage t on the land to Genl V Cortlandt for $1250 part of the purchase Money. The Genl had assigned the Mortgage to Robt Bown & the latter pressed for the Money— The Sum due had been reduced to $850. I loaned him $900 paying Mr Bowne myself & taking from ^him^ the old Mortgage which is in my possession— The Mortgage to you includes also 17 acres of Woodland in addition to the other premises— There never was so much money in the City before & such little demand for it. Genl Clarkson tells me that in the N. Y. Bank there are Deposits to the amount of an half more than their whole Capital— Yet they cannot discount even as much as usual— This State of things is favorable to Mr Gallatins loan, but such is the State of public Opinion that I shall be mistaken if any Considerable Sum is subscribed here— I think the Government daily grows more unpopular— The Council of Appointment & the City Corporation have lately made some appointments which I think very imprudent— They have turned out some very good Officers merely because they were Clintonians, & what is worse they have not restored the old Incumbents, nor appointed new ones as fit as those removed. The Ratcliffites seem determined to have their Revenge on the friends of Mr. Clinton—

I am glad to hear that Judge Miller preserves his Spirits & should be happy to see him here again. His Disinterestedness & sense of honor place him above the great Majority of those whom fortune has made his Superiors. We are all well— our love to Nancy Wm & Augusta— I am my dear father Your very affect Son

Peter Augustus Jay

P.S. I have recd. from M. Ryerson $100 on Account of Rent due from Willower— When the Interest on my bond becomes due I shall pay $500 on Account of the principal which I expect to put out immediately to a Neighbor of Coffins at Somers—John Jay Esqr.
