From John Jay to Maria Jay Banyer, 2[–3] February 1813

To Maria Jay Banyer

Bedford.— 2d[–3]. Feby. 1813

My dear Maria

Altho’ I have nothing interesting to communicate, yet I will not let the Mail go without a few Lines to you.

I have recd. your Letter of the 25 ult.—1 I feel very sensibly the affliction with with our Friend V. Schaack has been visited;2 and I greatly regret the Death of Judge Sedgwick—3 Such Events should make strong, but at the same time useful Impressions on our Minds.

There have as yet been very few Cases of the Fever in this neighbourhood— I am glad that your Physician thinks it as much under the power of Medicine as any other Disease. Hence it seems that his Treatmt. of it has been successful— If you know what it is, inform me of it.

Nancys Health and mine are the same as at the Date of my Letter of last week to Sally— Bismuth having been of Service to you, I think you are right in continuing to use it— I am glad that the little Supply of it which Nancy sent, has come to hand if necessary, she will send you more—

You know my opinion of Theatres— From me they neither have ^recd.^ nor will recieve Encouragement. A deep Tragedy is now exhibiting on the European Theatre— and the United States have begun to exhibit another— these are sufficient for Tragedy— As to Comedies & Farces— this is not a proper Season for them.4

The Squash Seed you have saved for me will be very acceptable, and the more so as the Quality may be depended upon— I wish also to have seed of the Bush Squash— ours (which before were excellent) were, without my knowing it, planted last Year too near to Pumpkins.— Good Seed may doubtless be had of the Quakers. Our love to Sally I am my Dear Daughter Your very affte. Father

John Jay

3 Feb. Mr. & Mrs. Munro, and Effey arrived the Day before Yesterday— they left us this morning— I have not seen Effey look so well for a long time past— Mrs. Banyer
