Gabriel Moore to William Harris Crawford, 29 December 1816 (Abstract)

§ Gabriel Moore to William Harris Crawford. 29 December 1816, Huntsville, Mississippi Territory. “Accompanying this you will recieve the memorial of the Territorial Legislature praying that the Indian title to certain Lands m[a]y be extinguished.”

RC and enclosure (DNA: RG 75, LRIA). RC 1 p. The undated enclosure (1 p.), signed by Moore, speaker of the Mississippi Territory house of representatives, and James Titus, president of the Legislative Council, is a memorial to the joint houses of Congress requesting “the extinguishment of the Indian title to the lands lying on the Mississippi, Yazoo, Big Black, and Pearl Rivers” in order to encourage “numerous emigrants to settle in the Territory,” and also mentioning that the sale of these lands would “yield a large ⟨resource⟩ to the public Treasury.” The letter and memorial were delivered to JM, who wrote on the cover: “A Copy it is presumed has been presented to Congs. If not this shd. be put into the hands of the Delegate from Missipi. Terry.” Docketed as received in the War Department in January 1817.
