Dear Sir,
I had the pleasure of writing to you, on the 12th of last month, by mr Carere of Baltimore, concerning the Books forwarded to you, of which I now Send you the Booksellers receipt. I preferred Debure because he was highly1 recommended to me by my friends mr. Chevallier, Librarian2 of the Pantheon Library—and mr. Van Präet of the Royal Library. It will give me great pleasure to execute any commissions for you during my residence at Paris. Not receiving any favourable communication from our minister mr gallatin, I have offered my services as agent for the Settlement of claims, and hope to find in this employment some means of existence.

Enclosures: (1) Receipt from de Bure Frères, 6 Aug. 1816, described at enclosure to Warden to TJ, 12 July 1816. (2) de Bure Frères to Warden, Paris, 7 Aug. 1816, stating with regret that the firm is unable to reduce the amount of the bill for books recently purchased; that it always charges the exact price at which it must sell; that it treats all of its customers similarly; and that it is confident that the shipment is satisfactory, because the firm has supplied only good editions (RC in DLC: TJ Papers, 207:36998; in French; addressed: “A Monsieur Monsieur Warden, Rue de furstenberg, a paris”). (3) Circular letter by Warden, Paris, 9 Aug. 1816, offering his services in obtaining compensation for, or recovery of, American property that has been seized by French authorities; expressing his “Intention to take charge of any other American Commercial Interests in relation to this Government, or its Subjects; of Affairs of litigation existing between them and American Citisens, and of Claims against the latter residing in France”; and promising that he will ask only “a Very moderate Commission or Recompence” (RC in DLC, in a clerk’s hand, signed by Warden). (4) Carlo Botta to TJ, 10 Jan. 1816. (5) Destutt de Tracy to TJ, 4 Feb. 1816.
