1. The enclosed extract was from William Henry Harrison’s letter to John Armstrong of 11 Aug. 1813 (3 pp.; printed in Esarey, Messages and Letters of William Henry Harrison, Indiana Historical Collections, 2:522–24), in which Harrison reported that he had instructed Ohio governor Return Jonathan Meigs to dismiss all but ten companies of the “immense number of militia” that had been called out in the wake of the British attack on Fort Sandusky. Noting that the Ohio militia, serving since the previous spring, would soon be discharged and that only about 650 of the Kentucky troops would remain in service, Harrison stated that a minimum of 4,000 militia would be needed for a proposed “expedition into Canada” and reported that he had arranged with Gov. Isaac Shelby of Kentucky to raise 2,000 men, whom Shelby would command in person. They would ride to the front on horses and then send them back. Harrison added that Oliver H. Perry had sailed from Erie in pursuit of the British on 5 Aug. with a “greatly deficient” number of seamen and officers.
