George Town August 28th 1815

Dear Sir

Permit me to make known to you Mr John Travers of the house of Hutchinson Travers & Co of Lesbon

Who has been for the last eight years under the Care of his Uncle William Riggen esqr many years U.S. Consul at Triest he is now making a tour in the United States partly on business & partly a journey of Recreation previous to taking up his residence at Lesbon

If you have any Commands to Portugal or spain you may Confide in him with the greatest Safety

Joseph Milligan

RC (DLC); at foot of text: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Monticello Milton Via [i.e. Virginia]”; endorsed by TJ as received 5 Oct. 1816 and so recorded in SJL. RC (DLC); address cover only; with PoC of TJ to James Ligon (for Patrick Gibson), 15 Jan. 1817, on verso; addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Monticello Virginia by Mr Travers.” Enclosed in John Travers to TJ, 11 July 1816.

William Riggin (riggen) served as United States consul at Trieste from 1802 until 1815 (JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States description ends , 1:406–7, 2:627 [2, 9 Feb. 1802, 2 Mar. 1815]). During his tour Travers did not visit Monticello (Travers to TJ, 11 July 1816).
