Dear Sir
Permit me to make known to you Mr John Travers of the house of Hutchinson Travers & Co of Lesbon
Who has been for the last eight years under the Care of his Uncle William Riggen esqr many years U.S. Consul at Triest he is now making a tour in the United States partly on business & partly a journey of Recreation previous to taking up his residence at Lesbon
If you have any Commands to Portugal or spain you may Confide in him with the greatest Safety

William Riggin (riggen) served as United States consul at Trieste from 1802 until 1815 (, 1:406–7, 2:627 [2, 9 Feb. 1802, 2 Mar. 1815]). During his tour Travers did not visit Monticello (Travers to TJ, 11 July 1816).
