Memorandum

Letter of June 18th. from Secy. of W. to Genl. Izard referred in that of   from latter to former, omitted in the correspondence sent to J. M.1

Secy. of War informs Izard that it is the determination Navy Dept not to increase McDonaugh’s force.2 That determination is to increase.

Genl. Harrison’s letter of Mar. 20. 18143 promises by next mail a Sketch of each of the Tribes on frontier &c,4 not sent with the letters to J. M.

Quer. Can Militia Officers in servic[e] of the U.S. be dismissed from […] service of the U.S. by sentence of Ct. Martial?

1Left blank in Ms. On 3 July 1814 Maj. Gen. George Izard acknowledged receipt of John Armstrong’s 18 June 1814 letter (DNA: RG 107, LRRS, I-50:8). No copy of Armstrong’s letter is to be found in the War Department letterbook (DNA: RG 107, LSMA).

2Armstrong informed Izard on 2 July 1814 that he had received from Secretary of the Navy William Jones “an explicit declaration, that he would not add to the naval means on Lake Champlain as suggested by Captain Macdonough” (DNA: RG 107, LSMA).

4Harrison’s detailed description of the Indian tribes, addressed to Armstrong and dated 22 Mar. 1814, is filed with a slip of paper marked: “Genl. Harrison’s letters of March 20th. & 22d 1814. T.
