§ From William Jones. 23 February 1814, Navy Department. “I have the honor to submit, for your consideration, the appointment of William Boyd, of Maryland, as Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, during the late recess of Congress, and whose name was omitted in the list presented to you on the 17th. instant. He received his appointment on the 24th: of September last.”

Adds in a postscript: “The sickness of the Clerk who keeps the officer record may account for the omission.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, ML); letterbook copy (DNA: RG 45, LSP). RC 1 p.; in a clerk’s hand, except for Jones’s signature and postscript. Letterbook copy does not include postscript. Minor differences between the copies have not been noted. JM submitted Boyd’s nomination to the Senate in a message dated 26 Feb. 1814, in which he also nominated Abraham Gallatin as a member of the Missouri Territory legislative council, and Anthony New to be inspector of the revenue at Urbanna, Virginia (DNA: RG 46, Executive Proceedings, Nominations, 13B-A2; printed in Senate Exec. Proceedings, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends 2:499–500).
