Thomas Jefferson to Mary Daingerfield, 11 March 1809

To Mary Daingerfield

Washington Mar. 11. 09.

Madam

By the post of this day I inclose to the President of the bank of Fredericksburg five hundred & ninety dollars on account of the hire of your negroes and subject to the order of yourself and miss Dangerfield, and tender you the assurances of my great respect.

Th: Jefferson

Mary Willis Daingerfield (1745–1818), widow of Continental army veteran William Daingerfield, raised ten children, including Sarah Daingerfield, on their Spotsylvania plantation, Coventry. Sarah Daingerfield married Nathaniel H. Hooe in 1807 (TJ to John Minor, 10 Aug. 1806 [MHi]; Washington, Papers description begins W. W. Abbot, Dorothy Twohig, Philander D. Chase, and others, eds., The Papers of George Washington, 1983– , 44 vols.: Colonial Ser., 6 vols.; Confederation Ser., 10 vols.; Pres. Ser., 11 vols.; Retirement Ser., 4 vols. ; Rev. War Ser., 13 vols. description ends , Retirement Ser., 1:90; Lawrence MacRae, “Descendants of John Daingerfield and his Wife, New Kent County, Virginia, 1640” [1928 typescript at Vi]; Fredericksburg Virginia Herald, 25 Aug. 1807, 25 Feb. 1818).

On this day TJ wrote David C. Ker, president of the bank of fredericksburg, enclosing and asking him to deposit in that bank “five hundred and ninety Dollars to be paid to the order of mrs [i.e., Miss] Sarah Dangerfield & miss [i.e., Mrs.] Mary Dangerfield” (PoC in MHi; at foot of text: “Mr David C. Kerr”; endorsed by TJ). On 16 Mar. Ker replied that he had received and deposited the money as directed (RC in MHi; endorsed by TJ as received from Fredericksburg on 23 Mar. 1809 and so recorded in SJL).

John Holmes Freeman, who served as overseer at Monticello from August 1805 to the autumn of 1806, engaged in July 1806 with Mary and Sarah Daingerfield for the annual hire of nine of their slaves (four for $239 from the former, five for $351 from the latter). This day’s payment was for 1808 (TJ to Mary Daingerfield, 5 Apr. 1808 [MHi]; MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1185, 1243). A missing letter of 18 Mar. 1809 from Freeman is recorded in SJL as received from Culpeper on 3 Apr. 1809.
