Dear Sir

My Son who has lately returned from Europe with public dispatches, and goes with them to Mr Monroe, will not fail to gratify himself by calling on you: and although I am not1 favored with a personal acquaintance with you, I cannot consistently with justice to him hesitate to announce him to you: respect for you having been a part of his education; and I do it the more readily as it affords me an opportunity to offer to you the assurance of my cordial respect & veneration. I beg your acceptance of my sincere wishes for your health & happiness, and am, Sir, truly yrs

Hamilton’s son, Paul Hamilton (1788–1817), arrived in Washington, D.C., from Boston on 2 Sept. 1811. He set out the following day to deliver the public dispatches he brought from Europe to James Madison at Montpellier and James Monroe at his Highland estate in Albemarle County (Madison, Papers description begins William T. Hutchinson, Robert A. Rutland, John C. A. Stagg, and others, eds., The Papers of James Madison, 1962– , 29 vols.: Congress. Ser., 17 vols.; Pres. Ser., 5 vols.; Sec. of State Ser., 7 vols description ends , Pres. Ser., 3:441, 443, 451).
