Patrick Gibson to Thomas Jefferson, 17 May 1815

From Patrick Gibson

Richmond 17th May 1815

Sir

I have received your favor of the 10th Inst inclosing $2940 in treasury notes, $2000 of which I shall hold subject to your order, as the balance together with the prds of your flour & Tobacco, will be sufficient to discharge the several sums mentioned in your letter of the 6th—I send you annexed account sales of your flour & Tobacco nt prds $2314.81 at your credit, nothing but the order and flavor of your Tobacco enabled me to get 10$ for it.

With great respect I am Your obt Servt

Patrick Gibson

P.S: On reflection I have consider’d that it would be better to pay off your note in bank with the treasury notes at the 1½ prCt than to let them lie idle and borrow the money at a disct of the bank; and should it1 be wanted here, have still to make that sacrifice—In case you should require any sum hereafter more than will arise from the sale of your flour yet to come down, you may calculate on my obtaining it from the bank upon your Sending me your note.—

RC (MHi); with enclosure conjoined; addressed, in James Ligon’s hand: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Monticello”; franked; postmarked Richmond, 31 May; with TJ’s notations: “sales of tobo & flour” and

 “B
1814. Dec. 14.   24
1815. May  8. 233
257”; endorsed by TJ as received 4 June 1815 and so recorded in SJL.

Missing letters from TJ to Gibson of the 10th inst and the 6th are recorded in SJL. According to TJ’s financial records, the letter of 6 May modified “my ord. to Gibson” of Apr. 29, while the letter of 10 May enclosed $2,940 in treasury notes and directed the allocation of $1,900 “for the bank”; $140 to pay Joseph Darmsdatt for fish; $100 for the use of TJ’s granddaughter Ellen W. Randolph (Coolidge); and $800 “to cover his [Gibson’s] advances for me” (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1308).

nt prds: “net proceeds.” When applied specifically to tobacco, order means physical condition (OED description begins James A. H. Murray, J. A. Simpson, E. S. C. Weiner, and others, eds., The Oxford English Dictionary, 2d ed., 1989, 20 vols. description ends ).

On 6 June 1815 TJ recorded payment of his note of $3,900 due to the bank of Virginia in Richmond. He then arranged to borrow $1,000 from the bank, sending a note for that amount in a letter to Gibson of 6 June (see note to TJ to Benjamin Jones, 6 June 1815; MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1310).

1Word interlined in place of “the money.”
