To James Madison from Alexander J. Dallas, 25 April 1815

From Alexander J. Dallas

25 Ap. 1815

Dr. Sir.

General Brown will probably be here tonight; and I think the organization of the Corps, and selection of Officers, may be compleated on Wednesday. Be so good as to put the inclosed into any shape, that will answer the purpose intended.1 I think it of some importance, that the feelings of the deranged Officers should be soothed; but it would be impolitic, and, indeed, impracticable to use any but general terms upon the occasion. I am, Dr Sir, Most respectfully & faithfully Yrs.

A. J. Dallas

Genl Brown has arrived.

RC (CSmH). Enclosure not found, but see n. 1.

1Dallas evidently enclosed the “draft of an essay” that he had previously promised to send, conveying JM’s thanks to the discharged soldiers (see Dallas to JM, 16 Apr. 1815). A partial copy of the essay, amended in Dallas’s hand in accord with the suggestions in JM’s 28 Apr. 1815 reply to this letter, is now to be found in the National Archives (RG 107, LRUS, R–1815). It was published in the Daily National Intelligencer on 22 May 1815, along with the peacetime army list.
