Sir

Viewing the memorial of Baron Bastrop as in every light a private claim, it would not have been consistent with usage to transmit it officially to Congress. The documents, accompanying your letter of the 2nd. ult.1 which is just received, sh<all> however be put into the hands of any gentleman you may be pleased to designate, at the next session. I am, Sir, very respectfully Your most obed. servt.

1. Livingston’s letter has not been found, but it and the enclosed documents, dealing with a claim of Philip Hendrik Nering Bögel, Baron de Bastrop for compensation for Indian trading rights of which he had been deprived, were presumably those that were transmitted to William Lattimore by JM on 2 Jan. 1806 and presented to the House of Representatives on 3 Jan. 1806 (JM to Lattimore, 2 Jan. 1806 [DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 15]; Annals of Congress description begins Debates and Proceedings in the Congress of the United States … (42 vols.; Washington, D.C., 1834–56). description ends , 9th Cong., 1st sess., 332).
