§ To John Church. 7 April 1806, Department of State. “In answer to your letter of the 24 Decr1 requesting permission to appoint your son James B Church as Vice Consul during an excursion you intend to England, I have to observe that you have liberty to name an Agent to act for you during your absence, being yourself responsible for his acts.”
