§ From Anthony Merry. 19 August 1805, Philadelphia. “Mr Merry presents his best Respects to Mr Madison, and has the Honor to transmit to him annexed the Extract of a Letter which he has just received from Sir John Wentworth, Governor of His Majesty’s Province of Nova Scotia, on the Subject of the Effects belonging to the President and Mr Madison, together with the Bill of Loading referred to in it. As only one of these Documents has been sent to Mr Merry, he is under the Necessity of taking the Liberty of referring Mr Butler for it to Mr Madison.”1

1. The enclosures are an extract of a 23 June 1805 letter from Gov. John Wentworth to Merry (1 p.), enclosing a copy of Lawrence Hartshorne to Wentworth, 22 June 1805 (1 p.), which enclosed the bill of lading “of the Articles belonging to the President, Secy. &c, shipped onboard the Brig Adventure bound for NYork, and consignd to care of Mr. Allen Super Cargo & part owner of the New Orleans, in whose Charge they came from France—the Brig Adventure is expected to sail tomorrow Morning.” For the goods listed in the bill of lading, see 9:503 n. 1.
