1. The enclosure (1 p.; docketed by Wagner) is a list of the names and nationalities of the seventeen persons making up the Merry household, including Anthony and Elizabeth Merry, Augustus John Foster, secretary of legation, a Piedmontese maître d’hôtel, German and French valets, a French cook and undercook, an English coachman, a Swiss groom, German and French footmen, Mrs. Merry’s Scottish maid, English, German, and American housemaids, and a German scullery maid. On 7 Jan. 1805 JM sent a copy of the list to Daniel C. Brent, marshal of the District of Columbia, with the added note: “The enclosed list having been registered in this Office, as containing the persons who compose the British Legation and their servants, I transmit it to you to be affixed in your Office according to law” (1 p.; DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 14).
