§ To Reed and Forde

21 April 1804, Department of State. “Instructions have been forwarded to Mr. Erving, the Agent in London, calculated to remove the difficulty, you some time ago stated1 as prevented you from availing yourselves of powers of Attorney from two of the Mariners of the Schooner Betsey to receive their adventures.”2

1. The Philadelphia merchant house of Reed and Forde, a partnership of John Reed and Standish Forde, carried on trade with France, Great Britain, and, in particular, New Orleans (Arthur P. Whitaker, “Reed and Forde: Merchant Adventurers of Philadelphia,” PMHB description begins Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. Rowland, Claiborne Letter Books. Dunbar Rowland, ed., Official Letter Books of W. C. C. Claiborne, 1801–1816 (6 vols.; Jackson, Miss., 1917). description ends 61 [July 1937]: 237–62). No letter from the firm to JM has been found.
