I have the Honour of sending herewith two Books which I reced. from my brother Joshua Barney some few days since, as also a Letter accompaing them.

Upon his retirement from the French naval service, joshua barney tended to his lapsed commercial ventures in Baltimore. He dined with TJ on 23 Oct. 1802, shortly after his return from France (Mary Barney, ed., A Biographical Memoir of the Late Commodore Joshua Barney [Boston, 1832], 233–7; Vol. 34:261n).
