From James Madison to Albert Gallatin, 25 June 1806 (Abstract)

To Albert Gallatin, 25 June 1806 (Abstract)

§ To Albert Gallatin. 25 June 1806, Department of State. “Be pleased to issue your warrant on the appropriation for the Contingent expences of the Department of State for one thousand Dollars in favor of Roger C. Weightman, Agent of William Duane: said Duane to be held accountable for the same.”1

Letterbook copy (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 15). 1 p.

1The warrant was issued the same day, as noted in the auditor’s office summary of Duane’s account with the State Department. Duane had printed “10,400 copies of 13 signatures laws 1st. session 9th. Congress … at $108.78 per signature or half sheet” for a total charge of $1,414.14, and “50 copies Laws U.S. 6th Vol. @ $2.00,” which with a ten percent discount came to $90. Weightman’s statement of the account, showing that after the $1,000 payment the State Department still owed Duane $504.14, was approved by Jacob Wagner (DNA: RG 217, First Auditor’s Accounts, no. 18,472).
