Sir,

Among the Magistrates to be appointed for this District, of Columbia, it would be pleasing to many of our fellow Citizens in Washington to see the name of Benjamin More.—A man whose industry, talent, and integrity, we are persuaded will enable him to discharge the duties of that station with honor to himself, and advantage to society.

RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR); in King’s hand, signed by all; at head of text: “The President of the U.S.”; endorsed by TJ as received 6 Mch. but recorded in SJL at the 7th; TJ later canceled “King Nichs. & others” and added “More Benjamin to be justice” to the endorsement.

Benjamin more, the founding editor of the short-lived Washington Gazette from 1796 to 1798, was included in a 5 Mch. entry on TJ’s list of appointments along with 14 others as justice of the peace for Washington County (Appendix I, List 4; Brigham, American Newspapers description begins Clarence S. Brigham, History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690–1820, Worcester, Mass., 1947, vols. description ends , 1:102; JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States… to the Termination of the Nineteenth Congress, Washington, D.C., 1828, 3 vols. description ends , 1:404, 417).
