On 8 Mch., John Condit sent Gallatin a letter noting that he and his New Jersey colleagues in the House of Representatives were recommending ANDREW LYLE as surveyor of the customs at New Brunswick. Condit enclosed a letter he had received from Phineas Manning, who described Lyle as a firm Republican and man of business who was serving his second term as sheriff of Middlesex County, having won election the first time “by A handsome Majority” against a Federalist “when the Remainder of the ticket faild by a large Majority” (RC in DNA: RG 59, LAR; endorsed by TJ: “Lyle Andrew. N.J. to be Surveyor of the customs at Brunswick N.J.”). TJ received the resignation of ANTHONY WALTON WHITE during the summer of 1801 (Vol. 35:84, 86n).
