Thomas Jefferson Papers

To Thomas Jefferson from Alexander Porter, Jr., 22 January 1809

Nashville January 22d 1809

Sir

In obedience to a resolution of a large number of citizens assembled at this place to express their sentiments and feelings at the present important crisis of our national afairs; I have the honour to transmit you a statement of their proceedings. In this conduct I hope you will recognise a portion of that Spirit, which ought to animate every American bosom at this moment. The zeal and unanimity which was displayed on the occasion is a sure pledge that the people of this Section of the Union view the measures of administration as they ought; that the falsehoods and calumnies circulated against the National Executive, has only added to the patriotism, and increased the attachment of their fellow citizens here.

I have the honour to remain with great respect your obt. St

Alexr. Porter Jr.
