§ To Thomas Newton. 11 June 1806, Department of State. “I enclose a copy of a letter from the British Envoy, complaining of the illegal equipment of two Schooners at Hampton with the intent to cruise upon the British trade. I therefore request you to make a careful examination into the circumstances alledged, and to prosecute every contravention of the laws, which may be disclosed.”
