To Anthony Merry, 23 May 1806 (Abstract)

§ To Anthony Merry. 23 May 1806, Department of State. “I take the liberty of forwarding to you the inclosed duplicate copies of documents, containing proof of the Citizenship of Edward Frethy, an American Seaman, who was some time since impressed into the British service, and is supposed to be at present detained on board of the Le Renard, or the Wolf; Sloops of War belonging to His Britannic Majesty. Permit me therefore to solicit your interposition to procure the discharge of the said Frethy.”1

1On 26 May 1806 Merry replied: “I have received the Honor of your Letter of the 22nd [sic] Instant, with the Documents it inclosed proving Edward Frethy, who is stated to have been impressed into the British Service, and is supposed to be detained at present on board either of Le Renard or the Wolf Sloops of War, to be a Citizen of the United States. I shall not fail, Sir, to transmit Copies of the Documents in Question by the earliest Opportunity to the Commander in Chief of His Majesty’s Ships on the Jamaica Station, to which I have Reason to believe that those Two Sloops belong, in order that immediate Attention may be paid to your Application for the Discharge of the Seaman abovementioned” (DNA: RG 59, NFL, Great Britain, vol. 3; 2 pp.).
