To Rufus King, 17 January 1806 (Abstract)

§ To Rufus King. 17 January 1806, Department of State. “I request the favor of you to peruse the enclosed letters from Mr. Hargrave,1 and give me your opinion respecting the justice and amount of any pecuniary claim he may have for the services he States that he rendered.”

RC (NHi: Rufus King Papers); letterbook copy (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 15). RC 1 p.; in Wagner’s hand, signed by JM. On verso in King’s hand is: “Inquiry respecting a suitable compensation to be made to Mr. Hargrave for carrying a small Box of Jewels from Eng. to Mr. Consul Eaton at Tunis.

“Ansd. 22 by sending him copy of my Reply to Mr. Eatons Letter to me on the same Subject.” Neither King’s 22 Jan. 1806 letter to JM nor Eaton’s letter to King has been found.
