To Thomas Jefferson from Clements Ferguson, 24 February 1809

Hinkson Bourbon County Kentucky

Sir

The pleasure that it gives me to live under a republican, Government is beyond the power of language to express; To commemorate the glorious establishment of republicanism I have been so bold as to have my youngest Son Baptized Thomas Jefferson. Wood to god he may Tread any of the steps that his great and good president Has waked before him—it has ever been my unearing wish To suppress Tyranny, and those miscrants that would Wish to establish a despotic government on the bases of Liberty. It has and is my wish if England would in her Mad career declare war against the united states, that my President, would give me some encouragement to Signalize myself against those lawless Tyrants.—

It appears at presant that there is an approaching chance And as it is vested in your Excellency’s power to Grant commissions I, hope I will not be forgot in the Presant cricis, or if you think proper that, I should Enter as a private volunteer I, am content, if I onely Have your sanction. And I pledge my honour and Salvation (I speake from the inmost resesses of my soul) That I will use the utmost of my abilities against the Enemyes of my coutry.

That your Excellency may long continue the ornament Of your country and the delight of your Friends is the ardent Wish of

May it Please your Excellency Your Excellency’s most Obedient and very Humble Servant

Clements Ferguson
