From Thomas Jefferson to George Jefferson, 18 February 1803

To George Jefferson

Washington Feb. 18. 1803.

Dear Sir

I inclose you the reciept of Capt Sprogell of the Sloop Dolphin who sailed from Alexandria the 15th. inst. and having had fair winds is now probably in James river. besides the boxes & hampers No. 1. to 18. he was to recieve at Alexandria a cask or keg of crackers, and some packages of porter. I will thank you to forward these, when recieved, by a trustworthy boatman to Milton. I expect to be at Monticello myself about the 9th. of March, to stay there a fortnight only. Accept my affectionate salutations.

Th: Jefferson

PrC (MHi); at foot of text: “Mr. George Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ in ink on verso. Recorded in SJL with notation “things for Monticello sailed from Alexa. 15th.”

For the shipment to Monticello that included crackers and porter, see John Barnes to TJ, 10 Feb. Also likely included in the shipment was a large quantity of sherry, 424 bottles of Pedro Ximenes, a sweet variety, and 278 bottles of different quality sherries, which Étienne Lemaire recorded packing “pour Monteselo” on 13 Feb. (MS in ViU, entirely in Lemaire’s hand; MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767-1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1115).
