Princeton [New Jersey] March 18, 1802. Introduces his son, John Witherspoon Smith, who plans to practice law in New York City.2

1Smith, a Presbyterian clergyman, had a pastorate in western Virginia in the seventeen-seventies, taught at the College of New Jersey from 1779 to 1795, and served as president of the college from 1795 to 1812.

2By 1803 John W. Smith was listed in a New York City directory as “counsellor” with his office at 16 Nassau Street (Longworth’s American Almanac, New-York Register and City-Directory, for the Twenty-Eighth Year of American Independence [New York: Printed and Published by D. Long-worth, 1803], 265).
