From Thomas Jefferson to John Barnes, 12 November 1802

To John Barnes

Washington Nov. 12. 1802

Dear Sir

Martin Wanscher writes to me for 40. Dollars. there will then remain due to him about 90. or 100. D. which he will be drawing for from time to time. the demand of his balance having been expected to have laid over till the spring, will be an addition to my last estimate. I am to inclose the money to him in Alexandria, so that I suppose it should be in bills of that bank or the Washington. I do not know if those of the Columbia bank pass there. health and esteem.

Th: Jefferson

RC (ViU: Edgehill-Randolph Papers); at foot of text in Barnes’s hand: “NB. said $40. not charged—12 Nov. ⅌ JB. in his Novr a/c—& not noticed by him untill after the Presidts Novr a/c had been closed—shall therefore charge it in his decr. a/c.”; endorsed by Barnes: “$40-B, of Columbia”; endorsed by TJ in ink on verso: “Wanscher Martin. 40. D.”

For TJ’s account with Marten WANSCHER for plaster work done at Monticello, see Vol. 35:96n. TJ received $40 from Barnes on 13 Nov. and sent that amount to Wanscher the same day (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1086). The president had made several payments to Wanscher recently. On 6 July, at Wanscher’s request, TJ ordered Barnes to pay $16 to Alexander Wilson on Wanscher’s account (MS in MHi; in TJ’s hand and signed by him; written on note from Wanscher to TJ, dated 3 July, requesting payment to Wilson, in James Dinsmore’s hand and attested by him, signed by Wanscher; signed by Wilson acknowledging payment). The plasterer also received payments of $14 and $10 on 7 and 29 Sep., respectively (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1077, 1080, 1081). On 2 Nov., TJ ordered Barnes to pay Wanscher an additional $30 (MS in MHi; in TJ’s hand and signed by him; signed by Wanscher acknowledging payment; see MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1085).

MY LAST ESTIMATE: see Barnes to TJ, [ca. 1 Nov. 1802].
